Dubey has been killed in an encounter in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. The encounter broke out after a police vehicle carrying Vikas Dubey from Ujjain to Kanpur met with an accident and the gangster tried to escape. Vikas suffered a few bullets shots and he later succumbed to his injuries. Vikas Dubey has officially been declared dead.

Vikas Dubey is the main accused in the ambush and the killing of eight police personnel in the Kanpur encounter case. Vikas Dubey, who was arrested from Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh on Thursday, reached Kanpur from Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh on Friday morning.

Police have claimed that the encounter broke out when Vikas Dubey tried to flee after a police vehicle carrying him from Ujjain to Kanpur met with an accident. The encounter took place at Sachendi border in Kanpur.

Four police constables have also sustained injuries. Vikas Dubey has died, the officials confirmed.

Vikas Dubey was arrested outside the Mahakal temple in Ujjain, Uttar Pradesh on Thursday morning just moments after two of his accomplices were killed in separate encounters.

A Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) team along with Vikas Dubey had reached Kanpur on Friday morning after the gangster was handed over to it by their Madhya Pradesh counterparts.

As the Uttar Pradesh STF team reached Kanpur, police vehicle carrying gangster Vikas Dubey from Ujjain to Kanpur met with an accident at Barra area in Kanpur.

Taking advantage of the accident, Vikas Dubey got out of the vehicle, snatched a pistol from an STF personnel and tried to flee. The police said that Vikas Dubey was asked to surrender. He did not and shot at the UP STF team, police claimed.

Retaliatory shots were fired, injuring Vikas Dubey. Vikas Dubey was taken to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital or Hallett Hospital in Kanpur. Doctors later declared Vikas Dubey dead.

A police officer confirmed that Vikas Dubey sustained injuries but not to what extent, saying it would come in the postmortem report.

Senior Superintendent of Police (Kanpur) Dinesh Kumar P said that the accident took place on Friday morning when it was raining heavily and the police vehicle overturned near Kanpur.

In a statement, SSP Kanpur said, "The vehicle which was bringing back Vikas Dubey overturned. He got out of the vehicle, snatched pistols of the police personnel and tried to flee. An encounter broke out and he was shot. Four constables have also injured."

"Gangster Vikas Dubey attempted to flee after the car overturned. Police tried to make him surrender, during which he fired at the policemen. He was injured in retaliatory firing by police. He was later rushed to the hospital," SP Kanpur West said.
